November 15th, 2017 — The whole world saw live footage as hurricanes ripped across the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and many states in the Southeast Region just a few short months back. When we heard about the devastation to the one and only baseball field on the island of Nassau, Bahamas caused by the tragic hurricanes months back, we had to head down to help out. This past week our Founder & President, Mickey Hiter, jumped on a plan headed for Nassau to help gather materials and rebuild the field. Three days later, the field was playable once again.
“When I got the call about the damage that the hurricane had left behind to the Freedom Baseball Little League field and the fact that they had no supplies to rebuild it, we knew that we had to help them out. We literally had to ship the most basic items there just to be able to make it happen. Besides the labor of rebuilding the mound, home plate, and the infield, items that were donated included rakes, mound clay, and a one of a kind custom built homemade drag made from spare stuff. Car headlights were used for work after dark, a rental car was used to pull the homemade drag to resurface the infield dirt, and 3 gentlemen with machetes were the edgers. As silly as this sounds, the experience was amazing and one I will never forget.” – SANDLOTT Founder, Mickey Hiter.
